RLG-Web Help and Information

RLG-Web is a Web-based app for playing roguelike games in your Web browser.

Browser Compatibility

RLG-Web uses WebSockets, which means the server can send data to your browser as soon as Rogue generates it, instead of waiting for the browser
to ask for it. This reduces the lag time.

WebSockets are supported in most recent browsers. RLG-Web has been tested using Firefox and Chrome; there should be no problems with them.
Safari 6 or newer and Internet Explorer 10 or newer are compatible. Opera ought to work, though it hasn't been tested yet.

You may encounter problems on mobile devices.

Starting Games

If you have already registered an account, you can log in. If not, create one with the "New name" button. Once logged in, RLG-Web will list your
saved games and let you resume them or start new ones.

If there are games being played, you can watch them whether you are logged in or not.

Use the "Stop" button to stop watching a game, or to force a game you are playing to save.

Playing Games

The games can be difficult to learn if you are not familiar with ASCII roguelikes. The '?' key will tell you what each key does. An 'S' will save
your game, and a 'Q' will quit.

The original method of moving around was with the vi-keys.

y

k

u

h

.

l

b

j

n

This is the most reliable way of exploring.

You can also move with arrow keys, or with the number pad, if your browser recognizes those keys. If it doesn't, the simulated keyboard can imitate
them.

Stairs are represented by '%'. Descend them by typing '>'.

Saving Games

If you accidentally close your browser, don't worry. Your game will be saved automatically. Your strength 18 character with the two-handed sword on level 22 is safe from bugs and network problems. But the dragons are sure to get him.

Ending Games

Be warned: your game will not end in victory. Rogue is nearly impossible to beat, by design. If you expect to win, you will quickly become frustrated.
Learn to enjoy the game anyway, and one day you may find the Amulet.

Accounts and Passwords

rlgallery.org doesn't use https yet, so you should not assume your password is safe. Don't use the same one you use on your bank's website, etc.

You don't have to supply a valid e-mail address. It will only be used if you ask to have your password reset.

You can change your e-mail or password on the options page.

Compatibility

RLG-Web cooperates with dgamelaunch. It uses the same account database. You can save a game in one and resume play with the other. Both systems
are capable of watching games being played in the other.
