Since the project is still under rapid development, details may change.

Browser Compatibility

RLG-Web has been tested using Firefox and Chrome; there should be no problems with recent versions of these two browsers. Safari 6 works, but older versions may not. Opera ought to work, though it hasn't been tested yet. Internet Explorer 9 is compatible, but older versions might not be.

WebSockets

If your browser supports it, RLG-Web will connect using WebSockets. This lets the server send data to your browser as soon as Rogue generates it, instead of waiting for the browser to ask for it. This reduces the lag time.

The site will still work if your browser doesn't support this feature, but it will probably be annoyingly slow.

Starting Games

If you have already registered an account, you can log in. If not, create one with the "New name" button. Once logged in, RLG-Web will list your saved games and let you resume them or start new ones.

If there are games being played, you can watch them whether you are logged in or not.

Use the "Stop" button to stop watching a game, or to force a game you are playing to save.

Playing Games

The games can be difficult to learn if you are not familiar with ASCII roguelikes. The '?' key will tell you what each key does. An 'S' will save your game, and a 'Q' will quit.

The original method of moving around was with the vi-keys.

y

k

u

h

.

l

b

j

n

This is the most reliable way of exploring.

You can also move with arrow keys, or with the number pad, if your browser recognizes those keys. If it doesn't, the simulated keyboard can imitate them.

Note: Super-Rogue does not work with the arrow keys or the number pad yet.

Saving Games

If you accidentally close your browser, don't worry. If your browser supports WebSockets, RLG-Web will save your game automatically. If not, it will be saved after staying idle for an hour, or you can force it to save when you return.

Your strength 18 character with the two-handed sword on level 22 is safe from bugs and network problems. But the dragons are sure to get him.

Accounts and Passwords

rlgallery.org doesn't use https yet, so you should not assume your password is safe. Don't use the same one you use on your bank's website, etc.

You don't have to supply a valid e-mail address. It will only be used if you ask to have your password reset.

You can change your e-mail or password on the options page.

Missing Features

You can't watch games that are being played in dgamelaunch yet. The opposite situation works: you can use dgamelaunch to watch games being played in RLG-Web.
